The Easiest Way to Do Costa Rica with Kids

Costa Rica is one of those destinations that sounds incredible for families until you start looking at the logistics.

You want the wildlife, ziplining, beaches, and adventure, but you probably don't want to spend half your vacation driving between activities with tired kids in the back seat.

That's one of the reasons I love recommending Peninsula Papagayo.

With Four Seasons Costa Rica, Andaz Peninsula Papagayo, and Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, all located within the peninsula, families have access to beautiful resorts and plenty of activities without constantly packing up and moving around.

You can spend the morning on the water, take the kids on an adventure, and still be back at the hotel with time for the pool before dinner.

For families, that flexibility makes a huge difference.

Why Peninsula Papagayo Is So Easy

All three hotels sit on Peninsula Papagayo, a private, gated community surrounded by the natural landscape of Guanacaste. Because everything is close, you don't have to pack a bag every morning and plan around long drives. You can decide what you feel like doing that day, fit in an activity without giving up the afternoon, and change plans without derailing everything else. With kids, especially young ones, that flexibility is what keeps a nap, a meltdown, or a rainy morning from costing you a whole day.

The tradeoff is that the peninsula is a managed environment. It's safe, convenient, and polished, but it isn't the rugged, off-the-grid Costa Rica some travelers immediately picture.

What You Can Do Without Leaving the Peninsula

The place families tend to love most is The Outpost, an activity hub within the peninsula that offers a wide range of outdoor adventures and eco-experiences.

There’s plenty to keep both kids and adults busy, including:

  • Waterslides and a splash pad
  • Rock climbing
  • A pump track for bikes and scooters
  • A playground and mini zipline
  • Basketball courts
  • Tennis and pickleball
  • An outdoor gym
  • Open green space
  • Art classes and organized activities
  • Ice cream and casual food stops

The Outpost is one of those places where the kids can spend hours moving between activities (it truly feels like a summer camp!), and parents don't have to organize an entirely separate excursion every time someone wants something to do.

Even the locker rooms are thoughtfully done, which sounds like a small detail until you’re trying to get everyone changed and ready for whatever is next.

If you want to step it up, ziplining is about ten minutes away, still within the peninsula. The hotels arrange everything, including transportation, so adventure becomes part of the day rather than something that takes it over. Most families don't realize how much that matters until they've done a trip where the activity required a two-hour transfer each way.

The Hotels: Same Location, Very Different Feel

Having three standout hotels in one area is convenient, but choosing between them isn't a matter of picking whichever looks best in photos.

Each one delivers a different kind of stay.

Four Seasons Costa Rica

Best for: Families, multigenerational trips, and first-time visitors to Costa Rica.

Four Seasons is the most established of the three, and it works best when you want plenty of options without thinking too hard about logistics. There are two beaches with different personalities, strong children's programming, and enough dining and activities to make resort days feel full without feeling scheduled.

Four Seasons is the hotel I'd lean toward for families who want the easiest overall experience. Between the children's programming, multiple dining options, beaches, and activities, there's enough to keep everyone entertained without needing to plan every hour.

It's also a strong choice for multigenerational trips because different family members can spend their days however they like and still come together for meals and activities.

Andaz Costa Rica

Best for: Couples, younger families, and travelers who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.

Andaz is more boutique and more design-forward. A typical day might be breakfast overlooking the water, a few hours at the beach, lunch by the pool, and an afternoon activity if you feel like it. It's still family-friendly, but it feels less structured than Four Seasons.

If you're deciding between Andaz and Four Seasons, I'd think about how much time you want to spend at the hotel versus participating in organized activities.

Four Seasons is my preference for families who want a full-service resort experience with extensive options for children. Andaz is a great alternative for travelers who prefer a more relaxed, design-forward atmosphere and don't need quite as much structure.

Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Best for: Couples and travelers looking for more privacy and a quieter stay.

Nekajui is a different experience. The emphasis is on privacy, design, and a stronger sense of retreat, and it's the option I'd look at when the hotel itself is meant to be a major part of the trip.

I'd look at Nekajui for travelers who want a more private, design-focused experience where the hotel itself is a major part of the vacation.

For families with very young children who want a full schedule of organized activities, I'd generally lean toward Four Seasons instead.

Beach vs. Jungle

One thing I always explain to families planning Costa Rica is that the country offers very different experiences depending on where you stay.

Peninsula Papagayo gives you the beautiful coastal side of Costa Rica, with beaches, boating, warm weather, and easy access to outdoor activities.

But if you're picturing lush rainforest, waterfalls, hot springs, and hanging bridges, I'd recommend adding a second destination.

That's where a split stay becomes really worthwhile.

Why A Split Stay Works So Well

Rather than asking one hotel to deliver every version of Costa Rica, give each part of the trip a different purpose.

Start inland, where your days can include waterfalls, wildlife, hot springs, hanging bridges, and rainforest. Then finish on the peninsula. By the time you reach the coast, the pace has changed. Mornings start later so there's more time for the beach and pool. An afternoon activity can be spontaneous rather than the thing the whole day is built around. Doing the adventure first and the rest afterward also means you aren't hauling tired kids through a rainforest at the end of a long trip.

Hotel Pairings To Consider

For families, Nayara Gardens paired with Four Seasons Costa Rica is an easy transition from rainforest adventure to a polished beach stay, with strong service and family-friendly experiences on both sides.

Tabacón or The Springs Resort paired with Andaz Peninsula Papagayo makes for a slightly more relaxed combination while still giving you two distinct sides of the country.

For a quieter, more private finish on the coast, Nekajui is a very different way to end the trip.

The right pairing depends on how you want each half of the vacation to feel. If you'd rather keep things simple, a single stay at Four Seasons is still a good trip, but you'll see less of what makes Costa Rica distinct.

For most families, I'd plan the more active rainforest portion first and finish with a few nights at the beach. That way, you can enjoy the adventure while everyone is excited and energetic, then end the trip with a slower pace.

If you only have a few nights, though, I wouldn't force a split stay. Sometimes choosing one great resort and actually having time to enjoy it is the better vacation.

Where This Leaves You

Costa Rica can be an incredible family vacation, but choosing the right combination of destinations makes all the difference.

For some families, that means staying at Four Seasons Costa Rica and enjoying everything Peninsula Papagayo has to offer. For others, it's combining a few days of rainforest adventure with a relaxing beach stay.

The goal isn't to fit every activity into one trip. It's finding the right balance of adventure, downtime, and experiences that everyone in the family can enjoy.

If you're planning Costa Rica with kids, we'd love to help you figure out which hotels and itinerary make the most sense for your family.
